  • Proper care to prolong the life of the computer

The computer is expensive and it is only right to take good care of it. Some of our house rules for the home computer are:
    1. Eating and drinking are not allowed when using the computer
    2. Place the cover after use
    3. Be choosy with the sites that you go
    4. Be choosy with the programs that you install
    5. Always check the validity of the anti-virus list
What can you add to my list?

Thanks for these tips. Our computer has cover too. Always see to it that the computer is properly shut down.

Aside from the things that you mentioned which are great, one thing that we should avoid to do is overusing our device. We also need to keep our computer cool. Too much exposure to heat, whether it's from being left in a hot car or in direct sunlight could easily lead to a shorter life of your device.

Yes, I agree with you that over using the device is not a good habit. It can easily damage. Like humans, it also needs time to relax and recover the energy. By doing these, it will save money. We must take care of our device like we take care of ourselves.

I want to add to remove the plug from the socket if the device is not in use for no reason whatsoever, it's just good practice. Also, make sure to be in a properly ventilated room to keep the device away from overheating issues, it might help alleviate some of it.

I'd add using a UPS to the list. It prevents your computer from shutting down from a blackout. Believe it or not, computers can short circuit if there is a sudden black out or power surge. High end motherboards are resistant to this but the cheaper consumer grade ones are not safe from this.

Plus you can use it as a power bank in case of emergencies. I've used it as a last resort during typhoon season.

I agree that the computer can have a problem when it is connected to a socket directly and even if if the computer is not running. There was a news report many years ago that lightning can ruin the appliance that is connected to a power socket. With the AVR (automatic voltage regulator) that also serves as a circuit breaker that disconnects the appliance from the power supply is a good protection.

Ensure the room you use for the computer is dust free. Clean it always with appropriate material. Do not leave it on when not in use. Put off the computer on the mains electricity when not in use.

I agree with all your tips. I would like to add to your list that we should be careful with the USB that we insert. Make sure that it has no viruses.

Keep it clean on the outside. There are lots of things that can get in your computer — dust, dirt, hair, crumbs, coffee. None of these are helpful and they can be pretty harmful, especially when they prevent the PC's fan from doing its job. Of course, it’s best to not let these unwanted objects inside to begin with, so close your desktop PC case with a proper cover. And make sure air vents are not blocked, because overheating is one of the main sources of breakdowns for most PC's.

Do not continuously use the computer heavily like playing games 20 hours straightly because it would lead to overheating and would damage the system unit especially its central processing unit. Improve or keep updating your installed anti-virus application and also your Operating system (windows, mac, Ubuntu). Updating the system strengthens its security against malicious malware and viruses.

Taking care of a computer is almost more about what you don't do to it. Its not a list of software to run. You do the same thing with hijack this that you do with everything else: google it to death. Not understanding something is a barrier that shouldn't be tolerated. Google everything you don't understand until you do. If you dont its like reading a book skipping over half the words because you dont know them.

I think don't overuse it, maybe 5-6 hours is enough in a day. Run anti-virus scan once a week for you to check the health of the software as well as to update the drivers as needed. If you have fan cleaner run it like thrice a week for the dust inside it will be gone and the hardware parts will be clean.

I agree with those tips. What I can recommend is buy UPS to prevent power surge in case their will be a power outage. Sudden shutdown of computers are one of the reason why computers parts suddenly broke down. Malwares are not the only reason why computer system are corrupted. Second recommendation is avoid auto shutdown of computers, this can also contribute in corrupting your Operating system. Lucky you if your operating system are only the affected one because you can reinstall it again, but if it's the hardware parts, you can spend a lot just for parts replacement.
